1. Clean and inspect a pool filter
A rising pressure gauge, weak return flow, or cloudy water can point to a dirty filter—but pressure must be compared with your clean starting pressure.
- Record the pressure with the pump running normally. Mark the gauge or write down the clean baseline.
- Switch off the pump, isolate power, close valves as your manual directs, and open the air-relief valve to release pressure.
- Clean the filter using the method for its type: backwash and rinse a sand or DE system, or remove and hose a cartridge. Never discharge DE where local rules prohibit it.
- Inspect the gauge, O-ring, lid, clamp, laterals, grids, and cartridge for damage. Lubricate only with the lubricant specified for pool seals.
- Restart with the air-relief valve open until a steady stream of water appears, then close it and check for leaks.
Recheck: If pressure quickly climbs again or flow stays poor, look for a blocked return, closed valve, dirty impeller, or a filter problem rather than repeatedly backwashing.
2. Diagnose a noisy or weak pool pump
Pump problems are often caused by air entering the suction side, a blocked basket, or a closed valve—not a failed motor.
- With power off, empty the pump basket and skimmer basket. Check that the skimmer weir moves freely and the water level is high enough.
- Confirm suction and return valves are in their normal operating positions. Photograph the valve layout before changing it.
- Inspect the clear lid O-ring and drain plugs for debris or flattening. Clean and reseat the seal; do not overtighten plastic fittings.
- Prime only according to the pump manual. If the pump repeatedly loses prime, look for bubbles at the lid or return jets and inspect suction-side connections.
- If the motor hums, trips a breaker, smells hot, or makes grinding sounds, stop. Electrical and motor repairs need the right meter, parts, and qualifications.
Recheck: A few small bubbles can be normal during startup; a persistent stream of air, a dry-running pump, or a rapidly falling water level is not.
3. Find a pool or plumbing leak
Evaporation, splash-out, filter backwash, and an actual leak look similar. Measure first so you do not dig up a pipe unnecessarily.
- Mark the water level on the tile or use a ruler. Compare a 24-hour test with the pump off to a separate 24-hour test with normal circulation, while noting rain and use.
- Use a bucket test: mark water inside a weighted bucket sitting on a pool step and mark the pool outside it. A larger pool drop than bucket drop suggests a leak.
- Inspect equipment pad unions, filter tank, pump lid, heater, automatic cleaner line, skimmer, returns, and visible plumbing for wet spots or mineral trails.
- Check whether the loss changes when the pump runs. A circulation-only loss points toward pressure-side plumbing; a loss with the pump off can point toward the shell or suction side.
- Do not add dye near a drain or suction fitting. If the leak is substantial, near the structure, or underground, use a qualified leak-detection or pool professional.
Recheck: Record weather, water level, and pump status. A single windy or heavily used day is not enough evidence to locate a leak.
4. Get pool chemistry back to basics
Good chemistry is a measured process, not a guessing game. Test before adding anything, and make one adjustment at a time.
- Use a fresh test kit or strips stored as directed. Test free chlorine, pH, and total alkalinity at minimum; test stabilizer and other factors when your sanitizer system requires it.
- Follow the product label and your local water guidance. Dosage depends on pool volume, concentration, current reading, and target range.
- Adjust pH and alkalinity carefully, then circulate and retest after the label’s wait time. Keep swimmers out whenever the label says to.
- Never mix chemicals in a bucket or container, never combine products, and never pour water into acid. Keep original labels, lids, and chemicals away from children and pets.
- If water is green, cloudy, strongly irritating, or has an unusual odor, stop guessing. Check filtration and circulation and ask a pool professional or local health authority for guidance.
Important: “More chlorine” is not a universal fix. A blocked filter, poor circulation, incorrect pH, or contamination may be the real issue.
5. Winterize a pool without trapping damage
Winterizing depends on climate, pool type, plumbing layout, and manufacturer instructions. Freezing water can split equipment and buried lines.
- Choose a closing date based on local temperatures and your pool manual. Clean the pool, balance the water, and let the system circulate before closing.
- Lower water only as far as your cover and pool instructions require. Do not drain a pool completely unless a qualified professional says it is safe for the structure and groundwater conditions.
- Turn off power, relieve pressure, remove drain plugs as directed, and blow or drain water from exposed lines. Use only the plugs, valves, and antifreeze approved for your system and local rules.
- Remove ladders, baskets, cleaners, and accessories; store them dry. Install the cover so it is supported and secured, and keep people and pets off it.
- During cold weather, inspect the cover and water level. Never chip ice with sharp tools or restart frozen equipment.
Recheck: In freeze-prone areas, a professional closing is worth considering if you cannot verify that every water-filled line has been drained or protected.
