What a new pool owner needs on the shelf, and why. Buy the test kit first; it tells you what else you actually need.

- Test kit. Free chlorine, pH and alkalinity at minimum; stabilizer and salt if they apply. See test kits compared.
- Chlorine that matches your system. Liquid, tablets or granules. Follow the label. Tablets usually add stabilizer over time.
- pH up and pH down. Small measured doses, circulate, retest.
- Alkalinity increaser. Keeps pH from swinging.
- Safety gear. Gloves, eye protection, a dedicated clean scoop, and a dry, ventilated storage spot away from kids and pets.
Storage rule: Keep every chemical in its original labeled container, lids closed, and never store acids and chlorine together.
